A Clean Preseason Opener at Highmark
The Buffalo Bills opened their 2026 preseason schedule on Saturday, August 15th by hosting the Carolina Panthers at Highmark Stadium, and the final score of 29-14 told only part of the story. From the opening drive to the final whistle, Buffalo looked like a team that had been working hard all summer and was ready to show it.
The atmosphere at Highmark had that familiar late-summer buzz. Preseason football in Buffalo means something. It means the garage doors are going back up, the smokers are coming out, and Bills Mafia is starting to believe again.
Allen and the Offense Find Their Rhythm
Josh Allen got things started in the first quarter, capping a crisp drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman that gave the Bills an early lead they would never relinquish. Tyler Bass added a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 46-yarder in the second to push the lead to 13-0 at halftime.
The numbers tell a confident story. Buffalo finished with 396 total yards, completing 26 of 33 passes for 269 yards at a 78.8 completion percentage. The offense controlled the ball for over 33 minutes, generated 27 first downs, and did not turn the ball over. Not a bad way to open the preseason.
The running game added some punch in the fourth quarter when I. Wheeler punched it in from 6 yards out, followed by F. Gore adding a 3-yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach at 29-7 before Carolina added a late score.
The Defense Was the Real Story
If the offense looked good, the defense looked better. Buffalo's front seven were relentless against Carolina's quarterbacks, registering 4 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, and 5 quarterback hits. The secondary added an interception and broke up 4 passes.
Carolina managed just 201 total yards on the afternoon. Their quarterbacks were under pressure all game, taking 4 sacks for 23 yards in losses. Buffalo forced 3 three-and-outs and stopped the Panthers on fourth down twice. The Panthers averaged just 3.5 yards per play for the game.
That kind of defensive performance in August is the kind of thing that makes a fanbase feel good heading into the regular season.
Bass Was Reliable, Penalties Were Not
Tyler Bass continued his role as one of the most reliable kickers in the league, going 3 for 4 on field goal attempts with a long of 46 yards. His only miss was a longer attempt, and the three he made were all clean and confident.
The one blemish on the afternoon was penalties. Buffalo was flagged 9 times for 98 yards, including 4 that resulted in Carolina first downs. That's the kind of thing you expect to see cleaned up as the preseason progresses. Sloppy penalty numbers in August are not uncommon, but the coaching staff will want to see improvement before the regular season kicks off.
What It Means Heading Into the Season
Preseason records don't mean anything when the games start counting. Every Bills fan knows that. But a performance like this one, with the starting offense moving the ball efficiently, the defense generating consistent pressure, and the team staying healthy, is exactly what you want to see in the first week of August football.
The Bills will be back at it next Saturday, August 22nd, heading to Cleveland to face the Browns. After that, Pittsburgh comes to Highmark on August 27th before the regular season opener on September 13th at Houston.
Summer is ending. The real thing is almost here. Go Bills.
