Eighteen Years of Learning What Doesn't Work
Dana Carver started grooming pets in 2008. For years, she ran Dana's Stylin' Pets out of the Grand Island Plaza, building a reputation for something that seems simple but means everything to pet owners: understanding that every dog is different.
She watched customers come in nervous about their pets. She watched stressed dogs shake in the tub. She watched her own hands swell at the end of the day from the repetitive work, the lifting, the strain of bending over tables that weren't designed for human bodies.
By 2015, after seven years in business, she'd learned enough to know exactly what she wanted to change.
"This Was My Last Hurrah"
In April 2015, Dana moved Dana's Stylin' Pets to a new location at 1732 Grand Island Boulevard, a few doors down from Theodore's and the Island Prescription Center. It wasn't just a new building. It was her chance to rebuild everything she'd imagined while working in that old plaza location.
She installed grooming tables that lower all the way to 16 inches so big dogs don't have to jump out and hurt themselves. She added two geriatric tubs for older dogs who need extra care getting in and out. She put in a clipper vac attached to the ceiling that pulls the hair away while she works, keeping the space cleaner and the air better.
And maybe most importantly, she separated the grooming area from the waiting area. At the old location, whenever the door opened and a customer came in, it would ding and wake up all the dogs waiting for their owners. Everyone would start barking. Now, back in the grooming area, it's quiet. Dogs don't hear the chaos outside. They don't stress.
"The new location is brighter, better, and quieter," she said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "This was my last hurrah, last time I'm ever going to move and I'm going to make it the way I always wanted it. Salon style."
Not About the Services. About the People.
What makes this story matter isn't the list of equipment or the upgrade to a nicer building. What matters is why Dana made these choices.
She's always understood that pet grooming is hard on people. "This is a high-impact line of work," she said. "Hard on the hands, back and feet." When she designed her new space, she made sure the tables wouldn't hurt her employees. She made sure there'd be four grooming stations instead of three, so nobody was rushing. She built a space that respected the work people do.
And she's always understood that every pet is different. She doesn't just move a dog through a production line. She takes time to get to know each animal, to understand what they need, to create a calm environment instead of a stressful one. That's why customers keep coming back. That's why people trust her.
Eighteen Years and Still Building
In 2026, Dana's Stylin' Pets still operates at 1732 Grand Island Boulevard with over 15 years of grooming experience behind it. The salon-style vision she built in 2015 is still there. Dogs still walk in to a quiet, bright space. Employees still work at tables designed for their bodies. Cats and dogs of all breeds get individualized care.
She's still doing the work. Still building something different. Still understanding that how you treat people and animals matters more than the size of your business.
