There's a thing about living on an island that people from off the Island never quite get. Every errand you can't run here is an errand with a bridge attached to it.

And for a stretch, laundry was one of them.

When The Laundry Lounge closed its doors on Grand Island Blvd, Grand Island didn't have a laundromat. Not a different one across town. Not a backup a few minutes away. None. If you lived in an apartment, or your washer quit in the middle of a load, or you had a comforter that was never going to fit in the machine in your basement, you were getting in the car and crossing water to deal with it.

That's a small inconvenience if it happens once. It's a real problem if it's every week.

People started asking before the doors ever opened

So when work started up in that same plaza, folks noticed.

Meghan Groat went right to the source and left the question on the Facebook page. "When do you open?"

She wasn't the only one. There's a particular kind of waiting that happens when something you actually need is almost ready and not quite there.

The answer came on July 1. "We are officially OPEN!"

Same plaza, different door

Rapid Clean Laundromat is at 2375 Grand Island Blvd. Carmen Scordo is the owner.

It's worth sitting with the geography of that for a second. This is the same plaza where the old laundromat was, just a different spot in it. Which means the building that had been part of the problem turned back into part of the solution, and anybody who used to do their laundry there knows exactly where to point the car.

Seven days a week, and that's the part that matters

Self-serve runs 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Drop-off laundry runs 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Both of those are Monday through Sunday, no exceptions carved out for the weekend.

Fourteen hours a day, every day, weekends included. If you've ever tried to squeeze a couple of loads in around a shift schedule, you know that beats almost anything else on the amenity list.

Leave the quarters at home

This is not the laundromat you grew up in, and that starts with the money.

There's no coin slot to feed. The whole place runs off a laundry card kiosk and the LaundryCat app, so you pay from a card or your phone and get on with your night. There's a bill breaker on site if you still want cash in your hand.

The rest of it is the sort of thing you only notice when you're standing there with a full basket and forty minutes to kill. Large folding tables. Baskets with hanging racks, so a load comes out of a warm dryer and straight onto a hanger instead of into a wrinkled pile in the back seat. Detergent and dryer sheets on hand for the day you forget yours. A seating area for the dead stretch between wash and dry. A water bottle refill station. An ADA-compliant restroom, which sounds like a small thing until it's the reason somebody can actually use the place.

Wash, dry and fold is listed as coming soon rather than up and running.

The parking lot is the tell

Here's the detail that made us stop reading and start paying attention.

The lot is built for RVs, trailers and big rigs.

Most laundromats never think about that, because most laundromats aren't sitting where this one is. We're an island with two bridges and the Thruway running straight through the middle of us, Buffalo on one end and Niagara Falls on the other. Campers come through here all summer. Truckers come through here year round. People hauling boats come through here every weekend the weather allows.

Somebody looked at that and understood that a driver in a rig or a family in a camper has the same dirty laundry as everybody else and absolutely nowhere to put a vehicle that size while they handle it. That's not a decision that falls out of a corporate playbook. That comes from knowing this particular stretch of road.

What people keep mentioning

The reviews are early and there aren't many of them yet, which is what you'd expect from a place that opened at the start of July. They're averaging 4.8 stars.

The interesting part is what people choose to write about. It isn't the machines.

One customer mentions that everything's clean and every machine takes a card, then gets to the part that clearly mattered more, which is that the owner offered to come in early for them. Another calls the owner a really nice guy who keeps the place clean, and says they're beyond happy with the service. Somebody who came in during the evening left talking about how helpful the person on duty was.

Popular Graphics, the shop that did the interior signage, put it about as directly as it can be put when they posted photos of the finished work. "It's a beautiful place to do your laundry and the Owner Carmen Scordo is a super guy, check them out!"

They're a vendor, so take it for what it is. But a sign shop doesn't usually go out of its way to say the client is a good guy.
